I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and I probably have some sort of Attention Deficit Disorder.
Per Day LA is the product of an idea I had while working in Los Angeles right after graduating college.
Although I didn't really do much at this job, I’d come home and feel exhausted. I'd "chill" for an hour or so, maybe watch some TV or get something to eat. Before I knew it, it was time for bed. I fell into this routine for almost half a year. I could sense myself losing hours, days, weeks, and months of my life—with a whole lotta nothing to show for it.
So, I asked myself: IF I wasn't sitting at this desk, what WOULD I be doing? I felt like I was missing out on so much. I started to fantasize about traveling the world outside of my office—meeting and befriending all kinds of interesting people, eating the most delicious food, listening to amazing music, challenging myself to learn and live and soak up as much as I could—EVERY SINGLE DAY—and maybe, one of those days, through sheer trial and error, discover who I am and what I want out out of this life.
And while I haven't traveled all around the world, I have been lucky enough to explore parts of South America (it's cheap) and Europe (studied abroad in Spain). I've been hosted by and shared experiences with people from all over the world. Food, music, culture—it was all new and exciting. I felt alive again.
I came back home to the States, excited to start my next chapter. All of a sudden, I had a whole new adventure ahead of me: new food, music, and culture. I've realized that most of the things most people associate with the idea of “traveling” don't require traveling at all. If you're lucky like me, and you live in a place like Los Angeles (and increasingly, almost anywhere in this day and age), amazing people, food, and events surround us if you simply take the time to dig into your surroundings.
So this website is my attempt to get people to discover a little bit about their surroundings, and perhaps themselves. Whether you're a resident or just passing by, there's a lot of interesting things going on in Los Angeles. It's an attempt to push people outside of their comfort zone and connect with their community in the form of daily, monthly, and annual "challenges."
Finally, and to be completely honest, this is a selfish pursuit. It reminds me to live life EVERY DAY. I feel better when I know what's happening around me—and I need new challenges to energize and stimulate my inner sloth.
As Anthony Bourdain once said, “There’s a guy inside me who wants to lay in bed, and smoke weed all day, and watch cartoons, and old movies. I could easily do that. My whole life is a series of stratagems to avoid, and outwit, that guy.”
Welcome to Per Day LA.
